Temporary Storage Building for Hydrophilic Fumed Silica
Our Client
A specialist manufacturer based in Wales approached us with a requirement for a large-scale, weatherproof storage solution for hydrophilic fumed silica, which is a fine, highly moisture-sensitive powder used extensively in industrial, coatings, and pharmaceutical applications.
Given the hygroscopic nature of the product, controlling humidity and preventing moisture ingress was central to the brief, alongside the need for a fast-track, cost-effective structure that could be deployed without the lead times associated with permanent construction.
The Challenge
Fumed silica’s sensitivity to atmospheric moisture meant that any storage facility had to minimise condensation risk and temperature fluctuation, while still allowing for efficient bulk handling and vehicle access. The client also needed a substantial footprint to accommodate palletised and bulk-bag stock, with multiple access points for both plant and personnel, all within a timeframe that a traditional build could not match.
The Solution
We designed and installed a 1,400m² temporary building, measuring 28m wide by 50m long with a 6m eave height, providing ample clear-span storage volume for racking and bulk material handling equipment. To directly address the moisture-control requirement, the structure was fitted with thermally insulated roof panels, reducing internal condensation by moderating temperature differentials between the internal and external environments, a critical factor when storing hygroscopic powders.
The walls and gable triangles were clad in single-sheet steel, offering a durable, low-maintenance envelope with strong weather resistance. Two electric roller shutter doors, each approximately 4.8m x 5.0m, were installed to allow straightforward access for loading vehicles and forklifts, while five single pedestrian doors were positioned around the building to support safe, efficient staff movement without the need to open the main shutters unnecessarily.
To further safeguard against water ingress at ground level, L-flash ground flashing was fitted around the building’s perimeter, complemented by a full guttering and downpipe system to manage rainwater run-off away from the structure and stored materials.
The Outcome
The completed building was delivered rapidly compared to conventional construction, giving the client a robust, moisture-conscious storage environment tailored to the specific demands of fumed silica. The combination of insulated roofing, sealed cladding, and controlled access points has allowed the client to store sensitive stock with confidence, while the scale of the structure supports current throughput with room for future operational growth.
