University of Birmingham – Temporary Lecture & Seminar Rooms

Temporary Lecture / Seminar Room

Following recent developments in the Covid-19 pandemic, we were asked by the University of Birmingham to provide a temporary lecture theatre and seminar rooms on a long-term hire basis. In addition, the building was also to be used for welcoming new students, events and graduation ceremonies.

The structure needed to meet social distancing guidelines as well as being suitable for use in all weather conditions.

The Fews Solution

We understood the Universities’ need for social distancing structures to ensure the safety of their students having already built a number of such structures in 2020. As a result we had already developed COVID-safe processes for our rigging teams including welfare vans, ensuring external contact to other teams and the public was limited as much as possible.

To house the spacious lecture theatre and two seminar rooms we provided a 25m premium structure on a 3m leg, with hard walls and deck level cassette flooring. Overhead ambient heaters were used to maximise floor space, and LED lighting used throughout.

The interior was partitioned to form a separate lecture theatre and seminar pods with one way entry / exit points.

All the doors were fully lockable to ensure security, and the entire structure fixed to the floor using external weights.
